College Presidents are an active part of a campus’ history. They are tasked with fundraising and development for the university along with shaping the future of the institution. As figures people such as students are less familiar with, our project hopes to shine a light on the way students can view former Carleton presidents both physically and emotionally through historical contextualization. This project is exploring some of the Carleton College Presidents with information about them, analyses of public sentiment and unified ideas across presidencies, and tracking the movement of their portraits over the years. To learn more about the methodology and data used, find the About page and the Source information located at the bottom of each analysis.
Carleton has a history of 12 presidents: Strong, Sallmon, Cowling, Gould, Nason, Swearer, Edwards, Porter, Lewis Jr., Oden Jr., Poskanzer, and Byerly. Due to the information available to the project and size of records, there will not be much focus on presidents before Cowling and Byerly. Please explore the textual and geographical analyses on these important Carleton College figures!
