Overview: Here is a word cloud of the most frequent words used overall. Of course, “Carleton” is the most frequent. Just based on this word cloud alone, you can see the variety of topics that Carleton tries to emphasize on their front page – athletics, community, faculty, financial, teaching. With this variety of words, one can assume that Carleton is trying to appeal to a large audience, hoping to catch the eyes of prospective students.

To look at the trends, we decided to focus on how the trends formed every decade.

The earlier years seemed to focus on simply getting information organized and on the website. The later years Created a sense of community through more student-focused areas of discussion. While more pictures started to arise as time went on, so did the variety of words

2016-2020 Breakdown

During the last 6 years, the world “campus” overtook “college” in being the second-most frequently used word. Why is that? Well, we noticed it was due to Carleton pushing campus events on its homepage, hoping that those interested would see them and focus on it. “College” seems too “clinical” / “formal” compared to campus.

2011-2015 Breakdown

The repetition of Carleton, campus, students, and college can be seen to have increased in usage. It is a possible conclusion that it was to create a sense of “all in one” community. Creating a unified Identity can be beneficial when recruiting students because they will feel a sense of comfort in the community opportunity and could increase the chances of more applications. In addition, the main page started to talk more about events, give dates and organize the website to hold the most valuable and useful information for students, to be easily accessed.

2006-2010 Breakdown

During this time, The main page focused on location, students, and activities. Words such as college, Northfield, December grew in usage. Other words like “Athletics” and “arts”, which are specific to student life, were introduced and started to appear more frequently in the hopes to advertise opportunities for students.

2001-2005 Breakdown

This time period saw the rise of campus life being brought onto the main page. You also see the appearance of “news” being used. Carleton started putting campus events on the main page to not only promote the events but to show the variety of opportunities that Carleton can offer its students.

1996-2000 Breakdown

To see gradual changes and trends form, we decided to make the range smaller by analyzing the most frequently words every 5 years. In this particular time period, “pages” seems to be on the same level as “campus”. The reason why is that these websites didn’t contain as many words as the main page does now; they would have links to other pages that contained more information. That’s why a word like “server” is larger in size than “academics”.
